NYX HD STUDIO PHOTOGENIC PRIMER and THE BODY SHOP SKIN MATTE IT PRIMER

Whew. Another year to start. Good vibes for 2012. Hope I could do more reviews, more sponsorships, more contests for you, gain more readers, more improvements in writing and more years for my blog! Hooray!

And to start the year right, I will do a review on two of my primers for 2011

I couldn’t pick one (best) since both works for me in different ways and I would recommend them to people depending on skin conditions and preferences.

Let’s start with the highly rave NYX HD Studio Photogenic Primer.
I don’t know if it is available in other shades but the one I got is in HDP 01.

PACKAGING:

It comes in a sleek black and white (reminds me alot of Makeup forever) packaging with a pump dispenser. One pump will dispense enough amount of product for your face (and probably, neck). The pump is quite good for controlling the amount of product you want to dispense off the packaging--- if you’re someone like me who do not really use this primer all over your face. I usually use 1/2 pump for covering some parts of my face (tzone).
I  like that the  packaging has almost everything you need to know about the product... the name, the ingredients, some info, the claims, the site where you can purchase it.. except for the expiration date (and it’s the most important things of all!--- or maybe, one of the most ;)).

CONSISTENCY:
The consistency is more liquidy than typical lotions (and less thicker too).  For some reasons, the consistency reminds me alot of Liquid paper (or correction fluid).

This primer contains silicone (Dimethicone), the one responsible for smooth silky feeling (to blend the makeup smoothly and evenly) and helps fills in lines or large pores on the face. Silicones also makes the primer lightweight. However,  in spite of the fact that it contains silicone, i find this primer difficult to blend on my face especially if my face is not totally dry.

Another thing that add burdens in blending out the product was the white color of primer. If not blended really well (or you put too much amount of product) on skin, this has the tendency to leave white cast on your face. On the other hand, if the product is well-blended on skin, this instantly brightens up the face.
NOTE: dispense the product onto the back of your hands. apply pea size amount on your face, part by part. then, blend out. It's better to start from little on your forehead going on your nose and other parts of your tzone, then if you like on your cheeks.... If you put too much products, the only choice you'll have is to erase everything, so I suggest don't do the "dot" rule on this product (dot rule- dotting all the foundation on your face before blending out). sayang naman yung time, effort and products, db? ;p

CLAIMS:

High definition, photogenic primer. Perfect for liquid makeup, foundation or face powder. Silky, lightweight application helps erase the appearance of fine lines and pores for a flawless finish. You makeup will stay fresh until the party’s over!

If I would have to recommend this primer, I would definitely recommend it to people with normal to oily skin since unlike most face primers, it does not have that smooth-silky feeling to it. If you have really dry and flaky skin, you will end up having trouble blending out the product on your skin.

In my case, I have combination skin (oily in tzone, dry and flaky on cheeks). I tried putting this on my flaky skin (cheeks) and i couldn’t make it works for me. I was expecting that it would smoothens out that area so I could apply my liquid foundation better, but it failed me. However, I would highly highly recommend it to people with oily skin!

During my OJT last December, I hardly retouched my face (mostly, no retouching at all). Imagine, 8-13 hours of no retouching??! Pretty amazing, huh. (Note: I haven’t tried it on summer yet)

Overall, I’m pretty amazed. It did make my makeup lasts longer and keeps my oil at bay! I haven’t used any products as good as this in oil control. Plus, it’s only PHP 650! (more or less).

PROS
-Lightweight
-cheap alternative for high-end primers
-It’s HD! (bongga db? High definition talaga)
- Mineral-enriched, talc-free and paraben free
- Cruelty-free, hypoallergenic and lead free
-dries fast (make sure to blend well)
-it does give your skin smoother and flawless look (can brightens up your face)
-not greasy
-superb in oil control
-makes any makeup last longer!

CONS
-hard to blend
-can leave white cast if applied too much
-it has scent (it has a mild powdery smell + something weird) – not really bad, though.

Next in the list is the THE BODY SHOP SKIN PRIMER MATTE IT

PACKAGING:

Unlike Nyx, TBS skin primer matte it comes in a much simpler tube packaging. There’s nothing much on the packaging, no ingredients, instructions or anything like that. While I was searching for the product details (for this post) I was surprised to know that this product main ingredients are Aloe vera extract and camomile extract. And guess what, it can be use as primer for lipstick too! LOL! I haven’t tried it yet, though. I will try, maybe tomorrow? (I wish it was included in the packaging)

CONSISTENCY:
It comes in a clear gel, like the infamous Smashbox primer. Both nyx and tbs contain silicone but unlike nyx, this is much easier to blend on skin.

CLAIMS:

This primer for normal and oily skins creates a smooth base for foundation. It has been designed to deter shine and make make-up last longer.
Smoothes
Banishes shine
Helps make-up stay in place

According to the description, this primer is for people with normal to oily skin. But I honestly think that this works better for people with dry to normal skin (plus sensitive skin). People with oily skin may find this product not-so-well in oil control. I even came across someone who mentioned that she reapply this every 2-3 hours. I was like, “Who the hell reapply primer every 2-3 hours?!” LOL. Maybe, she was referring to foundation, not primer. Anyway. Sorry, I’m being rude again.

Moving on, I apply this on my cheeks where my skin tends to be flaky (due to my acne soap). I don’t know if it’s only me but after applying it on my face, I squeeze another amount of product into the brush and mix it with my liquid foundation. In that way, the primer would help my liquid foundation (or even powder foundation) not to accentuates my dry and flaky skin. You may shoot me now, but it’s how i do it! I am not a professional, so I don’t follow rules.

Anyway, the oil control works for me (somehow). If normally, I would retouch at least 2-3x a day, using this primer I would just retouch 2-3x at most. It’s pretty ok too. Not superb but it works for me.

In spite of all the bad reviews in the internet, I still recommend it for people with dry to normal skin. It’s my saviour for my dry skin. Definitely, a great base to smoothens surface for better makeup application. (BUT overpriced! It was really pricey for the amount I was able to get. Imagine paying Php 800+ for 25ml??)

Btw, it reminds me of Ellana Primer, but TBS is less greasy. I’m not sure yet since it's quite a long time now since I had that. I will try to repurchase Ellana primer and see if it will be as good as this primer.

PROS:
-great base (smoothens skin) for makeup
- contains Aloe vera extract and camomile extract
- 2-in-1 primer (face and lips)
- helps control oil
-works really well for people with dry-normal skin

CONS
-overpriced!
-not superb in oil control

THE BODY SHOP TEA TREE SKIN CLEARING MINI SET

Hi lovelies! I did not blog for 2 days! LOL! I just wasted 2 days of my sembreak for nothing... LOL! No.. not really nothing. On my bday, I went to Makati Med for Laser Hair removal. Then yesterday, I went to National Library to do some research on my thesis, then me and my boyfriend went to SM Manila to get my bday package from Elicina Philippines (will do a separate post). And since we are already at SM Manila, we decided to just watch a movie. We choose to watch Real Steel. I’ve always wanted to watch this ever since I saw the trailer. It was a good movie! I swear. The story is good! It is a good movie for your little sister or brother or your children, they can learn alot from it.

Anyways, that’s just an update on what i did for the past two days. Now, let’s get back to business.

This is a mini set/ trial set of The Body Shop Tea Tree. If you haven’t tried the Tea Tree line from The Body Shop, I highly recommend you to get this mini set first. Honestly, products from Tea Tree line are expensive for my taste. Good thing The Body Shop had this mini set so I could try them out first before buying the full size. Plus, I think it is already a good deal. Imagine, for Php 900+ (on sale) you could get to try 4 products from the line. It was an amazing  deal...really!
Let me start from my most favorite to my least favorite products in this line.

Among the four, it is no surprise that my favorite is THE BODY SHOP TEA TREE OIL.

The Body Shop says,

“A medicine cabinet must. A pre-blended oil which can be used in many different ways to help soothe blemished skin. Dab directly onto skin at first sign of a blemish.”

My skin was in really bad condition. Well, I blame my school works for this! It was my last year in college and you know what it means. I was up all night doing my homework, plates and studying for exams . I was so stressed! Day after day, my face were then filled up with ugly zits on the lower part of my cheeks. It was itchy even at school. My boyfriend would sometimes scold me because i keep touching it. I was like “Ang kati kayaaaa!

Fortunately, Korea Cosmetics introduced me to Tea Tree Oil. When my acne gets itchy, what I often do is, I get myself a cotton pad, divided it into tiny pieces then pour generous amount of tea tree oil until the cotton pad is totally wet. Then I leave it on the certain parts of my face where it is itchy for few minutes. It soothes the itchiness since it has this methol-like feeling on my skin. However, if you think you’ll waste alot of products with this procedure, you can definitely apply this oil directly on your skin. It is just pouring it on a cotton pad works better for me.

PROS
-A little goes a long waaay. It’s just a 10ml bottle but lasted me a long time
-soothes itchiness
-dries out pimples
- the packaging was great. I would just throw it in my purse without worrying about spilling. There is no way that the cap will open by itself

CONS
-expensive. The non-promo price for this tiny bottle (10ml) is Php 499 (correct me if i’m not mistaken)

Would I recommend this? DEFINITELY! Get 2 or more when it’s on sale!

TEA TREE SKIN CLEARING TONER... my second favorite. Can you tell? I already used 75% of the product. I’m a firm believer of a TONER and I’m honestly is addicted to it. Remember my TBS Natrulift review on their toner? Oh gosh, I love this toner as much as I love that.

TBS says,
“Best if you want to: Tone your skin with a new "shake to activate" refreshing toner that removes traces of cleanser, make-up and impurities while leaving skin looking matte."
How it works:
"Lemon tea tree and Community Trade tea tree oil from Kenya contain properties that help fight blemishes and prevent new ones from forming.
Tamanu oil from Madagascar has a soothing effect and helps to calm irritation and redness.
Corn starch powder mattifies the skin.”

When I first tried this, it gave my skin a burning sensation . I was like What the Heck! Then later on, I get used to it.

This is funny but I don’t really used it as toner. I used this like an overnight face mask. I know tea tree line has face masks  but it’s pricey! (okay, i’m cheap!) So this is what I do. Pour a generous amount of this toner on a cotton pad then just leave it on your face overnight! I noticed that when I woke up the next day, some of my pimples were dried out. However, I don’t use it as an all-over-face mask. Just like in tea tree oil, I put it only in my chin area. 2 cotton pads in just enough for this step.

So how is it different to Tea Tree Oil in my usage? I mainly use the tea tree oil when my pimples get itchy while I use this toner during the nights when my skin is not itchy.

PROS:
-WORKS well on pimples!
-Feels refreshing on face

CONS
-Expensive again
-burning sensation

Another good product from this line is the Tea Tree Skin Clearing Lotion.

TBS says,
“Best if you want to: Moisturize with a light, mattifying lotion that hydrates skin and controls oil while helping to clear and prevent blemishes.
How it works:
Lemon tea tree and Community Trade tea tree oil from Kenya contain properties that help fight blemishes and prevent new ones from forming.
Tamanu oil from Madagascar has a soothing effect and helps to calm irritation and redness.
Contains powders help mattify the skin and control shine.”

I use as a moisturizer before applying makeup.  I really like the effect of makeup once I put this underneath. The makeup, especially the foundation, appears smoother on my face. During the healing process, since I put too many things to make my pimples dry, my skin turns flaky making it hard to apply foundation evenly. Plus, you’ll see some peeling on some parts on my face and this product helps me alot in applying makeup. I don’t know if it should work like that but it works for me like that.

PROS
-good moisturizer especially if your skin is in really bad break out (because you need a special moisturizer like this that will help in moisturizing your skin while preventing pimples)
- good makeup base (for me!)

CONS
-pricey

My least favorite is the Tea Tree Skin Clearing Facial wash which I still think is a good product! It’s just that it works as well as my other acne control facial washes.

TBS says,
“Best if you want to: Prevent blemishes and remove excess oil with a refreshing gel-bashed facial wash that won’t over-dry your skin and is gentle enough for daily use.”

The description is very true. When my skin feels tired and stressed, I usually reached for this product because it is refreshing on skin. I was surprised too that inspite of being a product for Blemished skin (which usually makes skin flaky and dry), I never felt any tightness. Indeed, this product is a great buy if you don't want to make your skin dry.

PROS
-Doesn’t dry skin
-removes oils, dirt and makeup.
-lathers very well

Cons
Should i write it again? Pricey for my taste

Overall, I was happy with all the products in this line. If only these were cheaper... Oh well, but I definitely think that these are must-buy products especially when ON-SALE!

A VERY LONG POST: BODY SHOP NATRULIFT SKIN CARE LINE

I’ve been using Body Shop Natrulift skin care line religiously these past few weeks, from toner, Cleanser, facial wash, Day and Night Cream, to serum. So, now I think it’s time to do my reviews on them.

Uhm, My mom told me not to use “anti-aging” cream at my young age. According to some people in the Earth, this product is most suitable for women in their late 20s, 30s or 40s. But because of internet and the power of google --- the brain I never had--- I learned that using Anti-aging products can be use, at my age, to prevent signs of aging such as wrinkles and fine lines. What a relief!

Moving on…
(About the product, tips and instruction are not originally from me, source: http://www.thebodyshop.co.uk)

NATRULIFT FIRMING DAY CREAM

About the product:
Skin feels firmer and hydrated, wrinkles appear softer. Moisturises for up to 12 hours. For signs of ageing.
Has a temporary lifting effect: skin is plumper and hydrated. Enriched with pomegranate seed oil and Community Trade brazil nut oil. The pomegranate seed oil we use in our firming skin care range comes from pomegranates that are organically grown and hand-harvested by farmers in south-east Turkey. To retain their natural goodness the seeds are cold-pressed. The oil that’s extracted is organically certified.

Tips: Apply after serum as part of your daily skin care regime.

Instruction: Massage into skin in a circular motion.

Price: Php 1625.00

My review:
I’m a type of girl who doesn’t see scented products as a big NO NO… As long as it works, I could live with that. This product is scented but believe me, the scent is nothing but good. It wasn’t the kind of creams that would slap your nose like those grandma’s scented creams. Actually, I think that the smell of this cream is simply gorgeous.
For texture’s sake, the texture is very creamy. You can get a little goes a long way with this. I think this tube would last me a long time.
In additional, this cream does a good job is making your skin soft and smooth. (especially when you’re using the entire skin care line).
For the cons, I wouldn't think it’s a big con for others but for me, yes. Since it is enriched with pomegranate seed oil and Community Trade Brazil nut oil, you really can get a lot of oils with these. Haha! It feels like the oils (for moisturizing) are too heavy for my skin. It makes my skin looks greasy… that is why I don’t really use this with Serum. But, if you have a dry skin, oh you should really really get this one for yourself.
Now, let me tell you about the temporary lifting effect or the skin being plumper. I wasn’t sure I’ve seen or felt that. I do have few wrinkles on my forehead and so far, it looks exactly the same before I had this product. But, I’m not telling you that this is totally a worthless product. I’ve been using it only for weeks, I haven’t even used a half of it so I can’t tell you yet. So if you’re looking for a product that would do instant job, go get a botox.
**NOTE: Glad I had this during cold season; don’t have to worry about looking greasy as my skin absorbs this easily. But beware, never use this during hot weather/season**

PROS:
>Makes skin soft and smooth
>Smells good
>Texture is very creamy. Little goes a long way
>Good moisturizer
>Feels amazing after hours of applying this cream--- when your skin absorbs the product (at first, it will give you a heavy oily greasy feeling hahaha!)
>It’s organic

CONS
>Expensive (for me? ;p)
>Can makes skin greasy (depends on skin type)
>If you hate products on tube, you’ll hate this.

NATRULIFT FIRMING NIGHT CREAM

About the product:
Skin feels firmer and hydrated, wrinkles appear softer. Moisturises for up to 12 hours. For signs of ageing.
Has a temporary lifting effect: skin is plumper and hydrated. Enriched with pomegranate seed oil and Community Trade brazil nut oil. The pomegranate seed oil we use in our firming skin care range comes from pomegranates that are organically grown and hand-harvested by farmers in south-east Turkey. To retain their natural goodness the seeds are cold-pressed. The oil that’s extracted is organically certified.

Tips: Apply after serum as part of your evening skin care regime.

Instruction: Massage into skin in a circular motion.

Price: Php 1795.00

My review:
If you’re sleeping in an air-conditioned room, you wouldn’t have any problems with these. In fact, I’m quite sure that you’ll fall inlove with this just like me. The best part is when you wake up in the morning, look at yourself in the mirror and you’ll see a glowing you. Otherwise, this would be a nightmare. Again, the oils can be too much for you to handle
PROS:
>Makes skin really soft and smooth
>Brightens your skin

CONS
>Comes in tube
>Expensive

NIGHT AND DAY CREAM
I like that they use a darker color for night cream so you could recognize easily which is which.
Natrulift Day Cream looks yellowish while Night cream is white.

NATRULIFT FIRMING SERUM

About the product:
Leaves skin feeling firmer and more toned.

Tips: Use morning and evening as part of your daily skin care regime. Apply after toner.

Instruction: Apply in a circular motion. Use morning and evening before moisturising.

Price: Php 1950.00 (Please correct me if I am wrong, I saw this on their website and it’s only $7 while other are like $9)

My review:
I think serums are more concentrated than creams. So, yes if you can’t afford to buy two creams (day and night) maybe, you could buy this na lang.
Compared to day cream, this feels much lighter on skin. But I choose to use this on evening before my night cream. I’ve been putting lots of products on mornings so I don’t want to add more burdens on my skin. Though, this is just for skin care, I still believe that anything that is too much is way no better. Oh well, nothing really special about this. For the price, actually, I think you could just skip this if you’re using day and night cream already.
PROS:
>Light on skin
>Smells good
>Organic
>Comes in a pump
>makes skin soft
>does not deliver sticky feeling
>In my opinion, you could use this as substitute if you can’t afford to buy day and night cream. It’s much cheaper than buying 2 creams right?

CONS
>Expensive

NOTE: NATRULIFT FIRMING DAY CREAM, NIGHT CREAM AND SERUM ARE BEST USE DURING COLD SEASON.

NATRULIFT SOFTENING CREAM CLEANSER
About the product:
Cleanses and refreshes for a softer-looking complexion.

Tips: Use morning and evening as part of your daily skin care regime. Follow with Natrulift Softening Toner.

Instruction: Apply with fingertips using circular motions, then remove with cotton wool or a muslin cloth. If product gets into eyes, rinse with clean water.

Price: Php 1025.00

My review:
I was surprised that I was actually using this the wrong way. Haha. I was using this like Pond’s Cold Cream because it thought it works like that. And indeed, it works like that. It removes my makeup instantly. Take note, I used this “before” washing my face. But the instruction says I have to use this before toner. So, I’ll try to interchange them tonight. Gosh, now I’m worried. You know why? Because whenever I put this on my face it feels like it’s burning my face! I can’t stand the feeling that’s why after removing all my makeup, I have to wash my face na. Oh gosh, if I’m doing it the other way, I would have to endure the pain.  Then see if toner could ease the pain just like the facial wash.
Oh well, but so far, I’m inlove with these. Superb in removing my makeup. Makes my skin feels softer, smoother and cleaner than ever! Yes, my favorite product in Natrulift skin care line!

Click HERE to see my first review on this.

 PROS:
>It does what it supposed to do
>Makes skin feels SOFTER, SMOOTHER AND CLEANER!

CONS
>Expensive

My review:
I started using stieva-a so yes, my face is suffering from lot of pains in peeling. I usually use my St. Ives Blemish and Blackhead control facial wash during evening but the hell, it’s so painful. Glad I had Body Shop Facial Wash with me. It’s so mild and makes my skin really soft. Though, I don’t feel like it cleanses as much as my St. Ives.
